Let me introduce myself

I’m Cara Blackie – an Educational Psychologist living in the Netherlands.

In December 2020 I emigrated to the Netherlands where I am continuing to support children, teenagers and families with both therapy and scholastic assessments. I am registered with the Nederlands Instituut van Psychologen, NIP 234136

I grew up in South Africa, where I completed my undergraduate at the University of Witwatersrand and post-graduate degree in Psychology at Rhodes University. I then went on to complete my PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) at the University of the Witwatersrand. After obtaining my PGCE I taught for one year and then did my Masters degree in Educational Psychology at the University of the Witwatersrand.

My Practice

Child Psychology

I see the importance for early intervention and support and the benefit of play therapy for children and psychotherapy for adolescents. I also combine art therapy into my practice to allow another medium for children to express themselves.

I see the use of assessments as a valuable tool to gauge a child’s global functioning and to get a better understanding of how best to assist the child. This would require the family and the school to get involved in order to assist the child. I am able to offer Psychoeducational Assessments (cognitive, educational, emotional and neurodevelopmental aspects) for children from 4 years of age until early adulthood.

Parents

As a parent, it is important to know that you do not have to be alone in struggling to deal with difficulties.

Schools

You may also wish to involve your child’s educators in the testing process as they can provide additional insight.

Teachers

In some cases, having a psychologist work directly with your child’s teachers in order to observe your child in class may also be helpful.

Cara helped pinpoint the difficulties that our child was having and he was then able to get better support at home and at school to overcome his challenges.

The Process

Starting a therapeutic process can be a daunting situation.

Especially when there are lots of questions regarding what support may be required.

Talk to me first

I offer a free consultation session (10 minutes) either telephonically or via an online platform. Here we can discuss your concerns, hopes and expectations and then discuss the process that may then follow.

Book your session

Contact can be made by submitting a contact form online or by sending me an email. We can then discuss if a 10 minute consultation session is required or whether therapy or an assessment may need to be scheduled.

Help your child to spread their wings

Identifying your child’s strengths and weaknesses will lead to recommendations for both academic and behavioural intervention. By detecting problems, an assessment can be used to assist in planning your child’s school program, to identify needs for special services in school, and to help you access resources in your community.
